KAGABO’S TESTIMONY

AGE: 21 YEARS OCCUPATION;STUDENT
NATIONALITY: RWANDESE
SEX: MALE

My names are Kagabo mark. This is my brief testimony of what happened to me in the Rwandan 1994 genocide.

Before we stayed near the Catholic Church and we were strong Christians .when we

Had that the killing had started our family which had at least 5 members

; Mother, Father, 2 sons and 1 daughter .I was the second last born we decided to go

to the church since we had hope in our church ,we reached the church and we were

Welcomed by a priest and also we found some others who had the same belief we

Stayed five days there peacefully and we had hope that we would go back home .On

The sixth day early in the morning we had a lot of shootings and after some time the

Priest came and told us that it was a simple thing it’s going to be solved .fear started

Growing into us some even started crying, my father called us and asked us to have

A simple prayer for the family as many of others were praying .The door opened, then

I saw very many people entering the door with knives, machetes, and guns. They were shouting a lot and smoking.

The Priest stood next to me and told us that we had to escape he went in front he showed

Us the behind passage. As we started running towards the behind passage, they shot my mum on her back, and my dad asked me and my sister to keep on running, I kept on running but always looking behind crying very hard I saw the interahamwe kill my parents and my elder brother with machetes. Every one took his own way but I managed to escape with

My sister. It was had to escape the Interahamwe militias. I was hiding with my young sister in the banana plantation. The struggle continued as we tried to move to the Ugandan boarder but

Unknowingly we meet the RPF (Rwanda patriotic front).

We were welcomed by these soldiers who were

Fighting the bad government of Rwanda that supported genocide. We were later

Taken by the RPF soldiers to the orphanages where I still live today with my sister.

Every time when I think of what happened in 1994, I always cry. After the genocide, I and my sister got time to burry our parents and my brother.

Every time in May we have a personal prayer with my sister to remember our family.

Am now trying to study hard and try having a better future. Am now responsible for my sister, and always make sure I take good care of her.
